Refurbishing individual homes within a live specialist care environment
LUMY is delivering an ongoing programme of refurbishment works at Moorpark Place for Active Care Group, upgrading kitchens, bathrooms and internal finishes across residents’ individual homes.
Moorpark Place is a specialist residential service for adults with learning disabilities and autism in Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire. Unlike a traditional care home built around bedrooms and shared communal areas, Moorpark comprises 25 individual houses, giving each person their own home within the wider service.
That makes the way refurbishment work is planned and delivered particularly important.
These aren’t empty properties being refurbished before somebody moves in. They’re people’s homes, within an operational specialist care environment where residents, support teams and established daily routines all have to be considered throughout the programme.
The refurbishment programme
The work being carried out by LUMY includes the refurbishment of kitchens and bathrooms together with full internal redecoration.
Individual properties are being transformed from dated interiors into brighter, modern and practical homes, with LUMY coordinating the different trades required to take each area through from the existing condition to the completed finish.
The before-and-after photographs from the project show the scale of that transformation particularly clearly.
Bathrooms are being completely refreshed, while kitchens are being replaced and the surrounding interiors redecorated to create a consistent finished environment.
But the visible transformation is only one part of the project.
Delivering refurbishment work around the people who live there
Working in specialist care requires a different approach from refurbishing an empty residential or commercial property.
At Moorpark Place, every stage of the programme has to be considered alongside the day-to-day operation of the service.
That means keeping access routes clear and safe, sequencing trades carefully, controlling disruption and coordinating work with the people responsible for supporting residents.
Noise, movement of materials, contractors arriving on site and temporary changes to familiar areas can all have a greater impact in a specialist care setting. Good project management therefore isn’t simply about keeping the construction programme on schedule. It’s also about making sure the work fits around the environment in which it’s taking place.
For LUMY, that means planning ahead, communicating clearly with the site team and making sure each trade understands the standards expected when working within residents’ homes.
Specialist care refurbishment requires more than good workmanship
Quality of finish matters on every refurbishment project. In a live care environment, it’s only one measure of whether the project has been delivered properly.
Care providers also need contractors who understand how operational care settings work.
LUMY specialises in refurbishment projects across care homes, supported living services and specialist healthcare environments. Our teams are accustomed to working in occupied buildings where residents remain on site and care services need to continue throughout the works.
We plan refurbishment programmes around the operation of each individual setting rather than expecting the setting to work around the building programme.
That includes:
- Carefully phased and sequenced works
- Maintaining safe access through occupied areas
- Coordinating different trades and deliveries
- Controlling noise, dust and unnecessary disruption
- Working closely with site and estates teams
- Maintaining professional standards when working around residents and staff
- Completing each stage properly before areas are returned to normal use.
It’s an approach we’ve developed through delivering refurbishment programmes for care providers across the UK, including previous projects for Active Care Group.
Kitchens and bathrooms in specialist residential care
Kitchen and bathroom refurbishments require particularly careful coordination in occupied residential care environments because they’re essential parts of somebody’s home.
Taking either room temporarily out of use therefore needs to be planned rather than treated as a routine strip-out and replacement.
At Moorpark Place, the programme is being managed so the necessary trades can move efficiently through each stage of the refurbishment while disruption to residents and support teams is kept to a minimum.
Plumbing, installation, finishing and decoration all need to happen in the correct sequence. Materials and tools need to move through the site safely. Work areas need to remain controlled. And the standard of the completed installation has to stand up to the demands of long-term everyday use.
That combination of construction delivery and operational awareness is a central part of LUMY’s approach to specialist care refurbishment.
A continuing programme at Moorpark Place
The work at Moorpark Place forms part of a substantial programme rather than a single-room refurbishment.
As the project progresses, LUMY will continue working with the Active Care Group team to deliver improvements across the individual homes while keeping the wider service operating around the work.
The completed kitchens and bathrooms already demonstrate what can be achieved: significant physical improvements delivered within a setting where careful planning, communication and respect for the people living there are as important as the finished result.
For care providers considering similar work across an occupied home, supported living service or specialist healthcare setting, the Moorpark Place project demonstrates why choosing a contractor with direct experience of live care environments matters.
